Peace & Justice

Every citizen, irrespective of tribe, place of birth, or race, has the right to live in a peaceful and cohesive society, aligning with the spirit of Ubuntu, which emphasizes shared common good. Harmonious societies are key to flourishing of individuals and communities and the greater wellbeing in society.

While Africa celebrates its rich cultural diversity, unfortunately, these differences have been misused to discriminate against the populace. As African Council of Religious Leaders- Religions for Peace, we assert that a just and harmonious society is integral to realizing the common good realistically.

The ACRL is dedicated to advancing positive peace by addressing both the root causes and effects of conflicts. We acknowledge that conflicts extend beyond physical violence, encompassing oppression, discrimination, and systemic injustice. Our focus lies in nurturing a resilient culture of peace in African society, encouraging reconciliation, and establishing institutions capable of managing conflicts without resorting to violence.

Build a More Peaceful and Just Africa:
Together We Can Make a Difference

Become part of a collaborative effort to foster peace, justice, and harmony across Africa

How We Make

We advocate for the idea of “Embracing the Other” to cultivate a resilient culture of peace throughout African societies. Our approach transcends mere conflict resolution; our goal is to nurture an environment where peace thrives through positive attitudes, institutions, and structures. Collaborating with partners and employing strategic direct interventions enables us to address deeply rooted conflicts, laying the foundation for lasting peace.

Acknowledging the influential role of religious leaders, including Africa Interfaith Youth and Africa Women of Faith, we consistently work towards enhancing their abilities in conflict transformation. Through training and support, we empower religious leaders to actively contribute to peace efforts across the continent.

Our commitment extends to combating radicalization, misuse of religion, and violent extremism in Africa. This includes engaging the youth, empowering religious leaders, and facilitating inter-faith dialogue. Our goal is to establish platforms for mutual understanding and collaborative efforts against radicalization and extremism.

Our strategy for preventing and responding to gender-based violence in conflict areas encompasses capacity building, policy advocacy, and creating safe havens for survivors. We aim to provide a supportive environment for those affected, addressing the underlying causes of gender-based violence.

We are actively involved in disarmament initiatives at various levels. Our focus includes mobilizing faith communities for disarmament advocacy and raising awareness about treaties and agreements like the Arms Trade Treaty and the Treaty on the Prohibition of nuclear weapons.

Recognizing the profound impact of conflicts on individuals and communities, we prioritize trauma healing and reconciliation. Our efforts are dedicated to addressing the emotional and psychological wounds caused by conflicts, fostering reconciliation, and supporting individuals and communities on their journey to healing and rebuilding trust.

ACRL is dedicated to advancing democracy and promoting good governance throughout Africa. Our initiatives encompass a broad spectrum, ranging from conducting situational analyses to engaging with regional blocs and fostering cultural dialogues. These endeavours are geared towards establishing accountable governance and empowering citizens through various area/interventions:

  • Strengthening Religious Leaders’ Role in Electoral Processes

Recognizing the substantial influence of religious leaders in societal dynamics, we actively support their participation in electoral processes. This involves deploying observer teams and sharing best practices to ensure fair and credible elections.

  • Promoting Accountable Leadership and Resource Stewardship

In addressing corruption and public mistrust, we organize dialogues and initiatives that concentrate on accountable resource management. Our anti-corruption campaigns are designed to promote transparency and ethical leadership, which are essential for social justice.

  • Cultivating Virtues and Ethical Societies

Our focus extends to reinforcing virtues and ethical values within African societies. Through educational series and the documentation of ethical practices, we aim to foster a value-based leadership culture that positively influences all aspects of society

Acknowledging the unique challenges faced by immigrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs), our efforts are geared towards facilitating their harmonious integration with host communities. We conduct research, host dialogues, and implement initiatives aimed at fostering understanding and cooperation between these groups and their host communities.
